Abstract : This study aims to describe the types of errors made by students of the Mathematics Education Study Program at Universitas Negeri Medan in solving problems related to field material in the Abstract Algebra course. The research employs a qualitative descriptive approach, involving ten purposively selected students as subjects. Data were collected through a written test consisting of four questions completed within 30 minutes, followed by interviews. The results reveal various types of errors, including conceptual errors, procedural errors, and computational errors. Conceptual errors were found to be the most dominant. The underlying factors contributing to these errors include a lack of understanding of the definitions and properties of fields, as well as difficulties in connecting abstract concepts to problem-solving. These findings are expected to provide valuable insights for lecturers in designing more effective instruction, particularly in teaching abstract topics such as fields.
Keywords: Student Errors, Field, Abstract Algebra.
